La familia Ortiz · The Ortiz family

From Uruapan to First Street, fourteen years and counting

Rosa and Hector Ortiz opened Sabor de Michoacán in 2012, in the same strip-mall corner you’ll find us today. Rosa cooks — carnitas in a copper cazo, mole from a recipe she learned in Uruapan, tortillas pressed by hand every morning before the lunch rush. Hector runs the front of the house and personally handles every catering job. Their son Javier manages the day-to-day.

We’re a family kitchen, not a chain. The recipes haven’t changed. The tortillas are still made by hand. La cocina sigue siendo de la familia — and after fourteen years and 480 reviews, our regulars are family too.

What Customers Say

  • Las mejores carnitas en todo Orange County. Punto. Como las que hacía mi abuela en Michoacán.
  • I bring my coworkers here every Friday. The mole is unreal — Rosa actually came out to ask if I liked it. Try the carnitas plate.
  • Hicieron el catering para la quinceañera de mi hija. 80 personas, todo perfecto, precio justo. Hector se encargó de todo.
  • Hidden gem in a strip mall. Handmade tortillas you can watch them press. Ignore the parking lot — the food is the real deal.
